Slushies for grown-ups

Take the heat out of summer’s end with a super-cool slushie cocktail

Remember hot n’ hazy school days that ended with you jumping on your bike and grabbing a slushie from the dairy? Ah, bliss … Well now you can re-live your misspent youth with a boozy twist.

Smirnoff Sorbet Frozen Pouches, available at Liquorland stores, are a great way to make an easy alcoholic slushie. Just pop them in the freezer overnight and then squeeze them into a glass with a sprig of mint to garnish. They come in three fab flavours – lemon, mango and raspberry. A great way to finish off the summer.

If you’re feeling adventurous, you could even try making your own. Just blend up some fresh fruit and citrus with water and your choice of spirit – but don’t go overboard on the booze otherwise it won’t freeze. You can't have more than 25ml of alcohol to 250ml of water or juice. Pop your slushie mix in the freezer for eight hours and then break it up with a fork or hand mixer, pour into a glass and serve immediately.

Some favourite flavour combinations to try include:

Fresh strawberries, lemon juice, vodka and Cointreau

Cabernet sauvignon wine and mixed berries

Wheat beer, cherry liqueur and sugar syrup

Baileys, Kahlua, coffee and cream
