Celebrating: Lighten Up

Why not enjoy a full-flavoured tipple without the high alcohol kick?

Whether it’s your turn to drive, you don’t like that tiddly feeling, or you’re one of the 49 per cent of Kiwi drinkers trying to lead a healthier lifestyle, lighter beverages are the new black. There are some great products on the market, lower in alcohol yet still packed full of flavour; perfect for long afternoons in the garden with family and friends.

Steinlager Mid – New to the market this year, Steinlager Mid is a full-bodied, mid-strength lager for the premium beer drinker. By adopting improved brewing techniques and adding more hops to the final  stage of the brewing process, Steinlager Mid is able to retain much of its flavour and aroma to deliver that distinctive Steinlager taste at just 2.5%. Great with fish and spicy foods, Steinlager Mid is a welcome addition to any gathering.

Speight’s Mid Ale – Launched in October 2014, Speight’s Mid Ale is only 2.5% ABV, but is brewed using three speciality malts to give it a smooth, caramel base, balanced against two New Zealand hops for a bitter top note. A full-bodied beer with characteristic Speight’s taste, yet lower in alcohol than Speight’s Gold Medal Ale – perfect with a barbecued steak.

Mac’s Mid Vicious – Mac’s has been a driving force for quality and ingenuity in the New Zealand beer scene since 1981 and this ethos is certainly at play in Mid Vicious. The combination of American and NZ hops delivers a subtle fruity aroma and flavour at an ABV of just 2.5%. A well-balanced pale ale that is perfect with wood-fired pizza.

Lindauer Enlighten Sauvignon Blanc – Lindauer Enlighten Sauvignon Blanc has 25% alcohol than Lindauer Classic Sauvignon Blanc. The secret to the lower alcohol content is the combination of blending and an array of filtration methods to produce a truly vibrant wine that shines with bright citrus aromas and a crisp refreshing taste. The result is a full-flavoured wine that’s just 8.5%. Enjoy young and chilled.

Wither Hills Early Light Pinot Gris – Wither Hills showcase their mark of quality with this Marlborough pinot gris, which at an ABV of 9.5% is 25% lighter in alcohol than Wither Hills Wairau Valley Pinot Gris. You will find fresh aromas of white peach, grapefruit and pear with spicy apple character. Perfect for the 5.30pm tipple and a great complement to snapper.

Mac’s Mid Tempo – Cider is a refreshing option on a hot day, but traditionally high in alcohol due to the way the apple juice is fermented. At just 2.5% ABV Mid Tempo is a light, cloudy cider made with Hawke’s Bay apples. A smooth, upfront taste with a deliciously juicy finish and it won’t leave you wilting in the heat.
